The town of Colusa heading Northeast to the vast Sacramento Valley is a two hour plus change drive from Santa Rosa, CA. At a glance it's a place where time has seemingly stood still — a wormhole journey back to 1960 Kansas perhaps. Processing plants propped up by deteriorating corrugated siding and monolithic cement silos dot the landscape around the countryside. On this second visit I was determined to dig out and mine some of the 'found abstract gold' I knew had to be there. It was and I got in a few licks, but Colusa wasn't our primary destination this trip.
We were headed to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge guided by birder Terri and ace-spotter Vance. A birding destination they know beyond well. We also sueeezed in a tour of the smaller Colusa National Wildlife Refuge. Suffice it to say, if you don't get the birding thang both these magnificent locations will turn you around in a hurry. To Carol and I the lagoons looked lush and packed with snow geese but were informed water levels are low now, awaiting the winter rains. "Wait till you see it then". The variety of species was astounding and included some Bald Eagles 'da boot.' I'm nothing near a wildlife photog but the place 'is' for those who are. An obvious mecca ...all reachable and doable in a day from our neck of the woods. Albeit a long one for those getting a little long-in-the-tooth ; )
Photography wise, if I had a keeper among the images, it's the Metal Roll-up Door, a subject I'm fond of. The contemporary linear lines mixed with the abstract, typographical 'streak abrasions' definitely work for me!
